Personality & Traits

General Overview Personality: Lex is a sharp, resilient, and highly skilled undercover officer, working for the NYPD’s organised crime unit. She was recruited straight out of the academy for her ability to blend into the streets, given her tough upbringing in a mixed-race neighbourhood of Brooklyn. With Dominican and Irish heritage, she has a striking look that allows her to pass as many different personas. A natural survivor, Lex is resourceful, adaptable, and hardened by both her real life on the streets and her time undercover. She’s guarded, slow to trust, but fiercely loyal to those who earn her respect. Lex has a dry sense of humour, often masking her vulnerability with sarcasm. She’s haunted by the lives she’s taken in her undercover work and struggles with reconciling her fake persona with who she truly is.

Undercover Identity: Lex spent over a year infiltrating a notorious New York gang, the Kings of Gotham, posing as a hardened street fighter and dealer under the alias "Roxy Santiago." She gained the trust of the gang’s leader and was on the verge of gathering the evidence needed to bring them down when the world collapsed into chaos. The apocalypse hit while she was briefly locked up in a police station cell, her identity still a secret to the criminals.
Strengths & Weaknesses **Motivations**:
- **Survival and Redemption**: Lex’s driving force is survival, not just in the apocalypse but from her past life of violence, chaos, and loss. She wants to protect others the way she protected Mateo, but the lines between right and wrong have blurred.

- **Reconnecting with Mateo**: Even though she hasn’t heard from her brother since the apocalypse began, Lex’s ultimate goal is to find him, believing that he is still out there somewhere.

Skills
- Expert in hand-to-hand combat and firearms.
- Skilled in street smarts, deception, and interrogation.
- Can operate in high-stress environments with limited resources, making her a natural leader in the post-apocalyptic world.

Weaknesses:
**Guilt and Trauma**: Lex is haunted by the lives she took during her undercover work. The weight of her actions leads to mental health concerns, making it difficult for her to cope with violence and loss, often triggering flashbacks in high-stress situations.
**Identity Crisis**: The lines between Lex and Roxy are blurred, causing confusion about her true self. This identity struggle makes her question her motives and actions, potentially leading to paralysis in critical moments.
**Trust Issues**: Lex’s guarded nature prevents her from forming close bonds with others. Her slow-to-trust attitude can hinder teamwork and make it difficult for her to rely on others, especially in a chaotic environment.
**Overprotectiveness**: Lex's instinct to protect others, particularly those she cares about, can cloud her judgement. She may put herself in danger to save someone else, leading to reckless decisions.
**Stubbornness**: Her fierce independence and reluctance to accept help can isolate her when collaboration is crucial for survival. This stubbornness may result in missed opportunities or prevent her from seeking aid when needed.
**Coping Mechanisms**: Lex’s dry sense of humor masks her vulnerability, but it also prevents her from addressing her emotions. This avoidance can lead to emotional outbursts or poor decision-making under pressure.
**Distant Relationships**: Her strained relationship with Mateo and unresolved feelings toward her father create emotional baggage that distracts her from immediate challenges. The lack of closure can affect her decision-making.
**Inexperience in Apocalypse**: Although Lex is a skilled undercover officer, her training does not fully prepare her for the unpredictable and brutal nature of a post-apocalyptic world. She may struggle with resource management or survival skills.

Personal History Roxy Santiago is the hardened, street-smart alias created by Detective Lex Rivera to infiltrate the notorious "Kings of Gotham" gang. Drawing from her upbringing in Brooklyn, Roxy’s identity reflects what Lex might have become if she had not joined the police force. Her backstory, crafted to be both believable and intimidating, gave her the credibility she needed to survive in the gang world.

Early Life:
According to the backstory Lex created, Roxy grew up in the harsh streets of East Harlem, a neighbourhood riddled with poverty and violence. Raised by a single mother who worked multiple jobs to keep food on the table, Roxy had no choice but to grow up fast. Her mother, once a promising artist, fell into drug addiction, leaving Roxy to fend for herself by the time she was 12 years old. With no stable parental guidance and a desire to escape her circumstances, she turned to the streets. Roxy’s childhood was marked by run-ins with the law, fighting, and hustling. By 15, she dropped out of school, fully immersing herself in the street life. She became a runner for local dealers, handling small-time deliveries and proving her loyalty to the gangs she worked with. Roxy learned quickly that respect in the streets came through fear, and she earned a reputation for being ruthless in a fight. Whether it was settling scores with rival gangs or enforcing loyalty, Roxy became known for her brutal efficiency.

The Gang Life:
By her early 20s, Roxy had built a name for herself as someone who could be trusted with high-risk tasks, whether they involved transporting drugs, weapons, or money across the city. She wasn’t interested in becoming a queenpin; her main goal was survival and making enough money to leave the game behind. However, she had a soft spot for young kids in the gang, seeing in them a reflection of herself. Roxy often became a mentor figure, toughening up the newer recruits while also showing them how to avoid getting caught by the police or getting killed by rivals.

When the Kings of Gotham took notice of her work, she was offered a spot in their ranks. The Kings were known for their brutality, controlling large portions of the city's drug trade and engaging in high-stakes operations. Roxy worked her way up, gaining the trust of their leaders, especially a key figure in the organisation named **Carlos "Viper" Torres**, who became both a mentor and an eventual love interest. Their relationship was fiery and tumultuous, bound by mutual respect but also fraught with suspicion, which kept her close to the leadership.

Character Traits as Roxy
- **Relentless**: Roxy never backed down from a challenge, whether in a fistfight, gunfight, or dealing with high-stakes situations. She believed that survival meant showing no weakness, and her reputation as a brutal enforcer solidified her position in the gang.

- **Protective**: Beneath her hardened exterior, Roxy felt a protective instinct toward younger recruits who reminded her of her own lost potential. She wasn’t afraid to teach them tough lessons, but she also tried to steer them away from the more dangerous aspects of the game.

- **Calculated**: Roxy wasn’t reckless. Every move she made was carefully planned to maximise survival and profit. While many in the gang respected her for her ruthlessness, her real strength was in her ability to anticipate and outthink her enemies.

- **Cold, but Haunted**: Despite her cold demeanour, Roxy was haunted by the violence she’d witnessed and participated in. The murders, drug overdoses, and betrayals piled up, slowly eroding whatever hope she had for a normal life. Yet, she was too deep into the life to walk away.

#### **The Collapse of the World**:
When the apocalypse struck, Roxy Santiago had nearly completed her mission. She had gathered critical information on the Kings of Gotham’s operations, particularly a massive drug shipment that would have led to dozens of arrests. But the outbreak of chaos trapped her before she could make her move. Suddenly, her meticulous plans and connections within the gang no longer mattered. Locked in a cell as the world outside crumbled, she lost everything—her identity as a cop and her position in the gang.

Roxy Santiago is a reflection of what Lex could have become had her life taken a darker turn. Now, Lex struggles with the blurred line between herself and the persona she wore for so long. In the post-apocalyptic world, the ruthless traits of Roxy might prove essential for survival, but they also threaten to consume what remains of Lex's true self.

Key Relationships in Roxy’s Life:
**Carlos "Viper" Torres**: The leader of the Kings of Gotham who took Roxy under his wing. Their complicated relationship was built on a mutual understanding of power and survival. While Roxy never fully trusted him, their connection ran deep, and losing him to the apocalypse might leave her with unresolved guilt.

-**The Recruits**: Roxy had a few young recruits under her wing, teaching them the ropes of gang life. In the post-apocalyptic world, she may search for them or be haunted by not knowing their fates.

**The Struggle of Identity**:
As Lex navigates the apocalypse, her identity as Roxy continues to haunt her. The years spent in deep cover blur her sense of self, and Lex finds it increasingly difficult to separate who she truly is from the persona she created. In some ways, Roxy is everything Lex despises—violent, ruthless, and manipulative—but she also represents survival and strength. In the fallen world, Lex may find herself relying on Roxy’s skills and instincts more than ever, even if it means losing touch with her humanity.
In essence, Roxy Santiago was more than just a mask; she became a part of Lex, a darker version of herself that she cannot fully shake. This internal conflict adds complexity to Lex's journey in the apocalyptic world.

Lex: HIDDEN
Lex was born to a Dominican mother, Isabella Rivera, and an Irish-American father, Patrick O’Reilly, in the heart of Brooklyn. Her mother worked as a nurse in a local hospital, while her father was a dockworker who struggled with alcoholism, putting a strain on the family. The household was chaotic, with Lex often caught between her parents’ turbulent relationship. Her mother passed away when Lex was 15 due to complications from overwork and stress, leaving Lex to care for her younger brother, Mateo, who was 10 at the time.

With her father increasingly absent and drinking his grief away, Lex quickly took on the role of protector and provider for Mateo. The neighbourhood she grew up in was rough, dominated by gangs and violence, and it was easy to get swept up in the wrong crowd. Despite the pressures, Lex stayed clean, using her street smarts to keep both herself and her brother out of real trouble.

**Teen Years**:’

Lex was a natural athlete and found solace in sports. She joined her high school’s boxing team and quickly became a standout. Fighting gave her an outlet for her anger and frustration, but it also earned her the respect of kids who might otherwise have pulled her into gang life. However, as her father became more distant and unreliable, Lex had to take on side hustles—working part-time jobs, tutoring local kids, and sometimes even dabbling in less-than-legal activities like running packages for local dealers, though she always kept Mateo out of that world.

Lex’s tough exterior and ability to navigate dangerous situations attracted the attention of local law enforcement. One officer in particular, Sergeant Quinn, noticed her potential and offered her a way out. He saw her potential and encouraged her to consider a career in law enforcement. Sceptical at first, Lex eventually applied to the police academy, seeing it as her best chance to escape the streets and provide a better life for her brother.

**Police Academy and Early Career**:
Lex joined the police academy at 19, determined to make a fresh start. Her street smarts and raw talent made her stand out, and despite her struggles with authority and a few run-ins with senior officers over her rebellious streak, she graduated near the top of her class. During this time, she managed to get her brother Mateo out of Brooklyn and into a boarding school with the help of a scholarship, determined that he would have a better future than she did.

Early in her police career, Lex worked in various departments, from patrols to vice, before being tapped for undercover work. Her past and ability to blend into different environments made her a perfect fit for deep cover assignments. Lex was soon assigned to take down some of the most dangerous gangs in New York, and she became one of the department’s most effective undercover agents.

Her fake persona as "Roxy Santiago" was designed to be a reflection of what she might have become if she hadn’t made it out of the streets. Tough, street-smart, and capable of violence, "Roxy" was her way of connecting with the gang members she infiltrated, but it also reminded Lex of her own family’s struggles and the fine line between survival and criminality.

Relationships
- **Mateo Rivera**: Lex’s younger brother is the most important person in her life. Though she worked tirelessly to keep him safe and give him a better chance at life, their relationship became strained as Mateo grew older. He resented her control and the sacrifices she made for him, and they grew distant after he left for college. Despite this, Lex always checks in on him, making sure he’s safe from afar.

- **Patrick O’Reilly**: Lex’s relationship with her father was always strained. After her mother’s death, Patrick spiraled into alcoholism, leaving Lex to pick up the pieces. Though they haven’t spoken in years, Lex still carries the weight of unresolved anger and disappointment toward him.

- **Sergeant Quinn**: The officer who saw Lex’s potential and pushed her toward the police academy became a father figure to her. Though he’s long since retired, Quinn still keeps in touch with Lex, offering advice and support, especially as her work undercover has taken a toll on her mental health.
