Mission:
Settling In
Location: Wisconsin
Timeline: September 20th - Late afternoon
A few days after their run in with the roadblock and escapades at the roadhouse Jackson had started to breathe easier. To many it would seem weird, but they hadn’t had another run in, had relieved some stress and so far were far enough away from everyone at least for now that they hadn’t had another run in.
Mackenzie was very vigilant as they made their way cautiously north now. They had been close to Chicago, trying to find a way to a safe zone when on the 6th of September air-force jets had screamed over head and bombed the city.
Now 2 weeks later they had made their way into Wisconsin, avoiding all manner of things but still when she closed her eyes, the burning city of Chicago was emblazoned on her brain.
They were not getting far each day, and once when they had found a dense forest area they had stayed for a day to rest and throw off any chance of being followed.
“There is a side road coming up.” She said to Jackson as they drove along a stretch of road. “Runs along the highway to Steven's Point, a city near by.”
“Left or right babe?” Jackson asked letting out a breathe. “Are you sure we want to go into a city?”
“Left and no we are avoiding it. It might be the same as Chicargo.” Mac said softly. “I think finding a small place to hide out will serve us better.”
Jackson nodded slowly. “Place to hide or for us to settle down for a bit?” he half teased even though he knew she was right. He made the turn slowly, his eyes darting around the area. “Anything feel off love?”
Mackenzie shook her head but she was still watchful. “Just because I cannot see it, does not mean things are not wrong out there.”
He nodded slowly. “That is true, and ok so what is our plan, find a place to hold up manage our food, and then what, pretend we’re rabbits?”
Mac rolled her eyes. “No Jackson. Not rabbits. We need to find a way out of the USA or a safe place where we can work with others to stay safe.”
Jackson shook his head. “Mac you know I am joking, and frankly finding a safe place that could be a doing, and getting out of here to go where? We have no idea if any other countries are safe.”
“Maybe not but there are islands out there... find a tropical island that has a low population?”
“I could see you in a little polynesian outfit, or less.” he teased. “Alright well it would need to be a decent group of folks so we have the services we need.”
Mac smiled as he spoke. “We would need a boat... a Sail Boat?”
“At this point we could find a yacht that we could strategically transport our equipment to an alternate location. Just as long as I get to see you in a micro bikini I am game.”
She had to laugh softly at that. “The way the world is going... it may be no clothes before we know it.”
“I am game if you are.” he quipped quickly with a smirk.
“There would be some I would not like to see naked” She quipped back. Then she pointed. “There look!” A large black semi was barrelling along another side road up ahead.
Jackson slammed on the breaks as he saw the black semi. “Shit.” he exclaimed as he hoped that they had not been spotted. “The way that is driving there is something going on.”
Mac nodded and gripped the dash as she leaned forward to watch it as it continued on it's way. “They are looking for something for sure.”
Jackson nodded. “Yes and it would be best if we weren’t added to that list, so babe I am going to need a place to either hide or an area that, that thing can’t go.”
Mac picked up the map and began to look at it hard. “Next right. Dirt road.”
Jackson quickly made that right turn, and could feel the road underneath the pickup change. “Well this is going to be fun.”
“We do not have much of a choice.” MAc muttered as she continued to read the map. “This leads onto other roads, just as rough though.”
“Then hang on cause it is going to be bumpy.” he said as the road turned to more of a washboard surface.
Mac didn’t nod but kept her gaze on the side mirror looking behind them. She then looked at the map. “In about a mile is what looks like an empty area, next to woods...”
Jackson gave just a perceptible nod as his eyes scanned everything. “Ok Babe.”
Mackenzie kept an eye out as they turned onto the next turn. It was... "Gate.." She murmured. It had been bashed in. Slowly they continued down the rough road.
